How was Lexus Founded?

The answer to “Is Lexus made by Toyota?” is yes, but the answer to “Is Lexus Toyota?” is no. Lexus is its own independent brand, so it had its own unique path to success. See how Lexus came into its own after laying down roots in Nagoya, Japan.

  • 1983 — Toyota started Project F1 (Flagship One) after chairman Eiji Toyoda challenged his team to create the world’s best car. Market research was conducted among the elite in Laguna Beach, California to find out what discerning drivers craved.
  • 1989 — After Project F1 was completed, this research was used to create Lexus. The brand set its sights on international markets – including a network of 81 new Lexus dealerships in the United States.
  • January 1989 — The first Lexus LS 400 debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Its robust 4.0L V8 gasoline engine and rear-wheel drive caused quite a stir in the mild-mannered luxury sedan market.
  • 2019 — After decades of growth in the automotive market, the ten millionth Lexus is sold.
